Sam smiled again hopefully before dipping her nose back into
her book, leaving him to his boredom once more. He flicked at a piece of cat hair that had
attached itself to his chin as he stood to get himself something to drink. "Anybody else want something?" A brief motion towards the kitchen and a
shrug seemed enough of a pause before continuing on.
Popping open the fridge in the little kitchen revealed the
unopened package of hotdogs and some wrapped buns that would be their dinner
for that night. Sadly, they would not be
grilled but instead boiled on the stove.
He grumbled as he reached past the dogs to grab a beer from the back of
the chest.
"Hey, toss me one!" Jack sauntered in from the other room, pushing
his glasses back up on his nose and straightening his shirt. His blonde hair was a mess and there was a
red mark on his cheek from the rug where he had been passed out.
"Have a nice nap?" Grinning, he tossed Jack a
bottle before rummaging through a drawer to find an opener. Cranking the top off, he leaned against the counter
and took a sip. The rain still pattered
against the cabin with a steady drone but it seemed to have let up a little
bit.
Jack screwed up his face and made an obscene gesture as he
scratched the mark on his cheek before opening his bottle and taking a healthy
swig. "You think we'll get to use
that boat at all before heading home?" Jack set his bottle down and rested
his hands on the countertop, peering out the window over the sink into the growing gloom. His lanky frame still seemed half asleep the
way it drooped to support his casual lean.
"I mean, I'll take this over going back to work any day, but that
lake is just taunting me!" He threw
his hands up in a gesture of mock desperation before smoothing his hair and grabbing
his beer with a huff.
"Your guess is as good as mine. We could look at the weather, but there's
hardly any cell signal out here. One of
the curses of being out in the middle of nowhere!" He laughed before taking another sip. Not having a signal was one of the things
that he liked about being out here. It
meant he could really get away for a while.
As far as he was concerned, the world ceased to exist until he was back
within range of the nearest cell tower.
It was really relaxing to him.
